Character Name: Jason Of The Dark (Elfriend) Race: Human Class: Mage
Sex: Male Age: 30 Status: Active
Played By:  Graham Brown

Description:

Jason is of medium height and slim build being 5' 9" tall and weighing under 9 stone. He has black hair and black eyes. Usually Jason wears a loose fitting shirt and trousers rather than the more traditional wizards robes, this when combined with a dagger on either hip (more for effect than use) often lead people to believe that he is a "rogue" rather than a mage, a mistake which saved his life on a number of occasions during his early career. He never goes out without his "girdle of many pouches" and two magical rings usually a Ring of Wizardry and a Ring of Regeneration.

History:

Jason's early life is clouded in mystery, even Corrie, who knows him better than anyone else in the group and is one of his closest friends can only guess at most of it.

In fact Jason was sold by his family to a passing wizard as a servant boy when very young. His father farmed a small holding and that year the crops had failed and he could not feed his wife and other young children and needed the money to buy food. Jason travelled with the mage to Waterdeep where he worked as a servant in his house. During this time he was befriended by the son of a young noble who had been apprenticed to the mage and was of about the same age. He taught Jason how to read and write as well as showing him the first lessons that he himself was being taught by the mage. Jason had a natural aptitude for magic and learnt all the boy had to teach, it is perhaps fortunate that the boy was not skilled as this meant his own teachings progressed slowly giving Jason the time he needed.

When Jason was 15 the mage, the apprentice and Jason all went on a trip to Skullport. Whilst in Skullport the group were set upon and the mage and the apprentice murdered, Jason managed to escape the trap with only minor injuries. The fight was observed by a Drow mage who noted Jason's attempts to use magic and the high regard in which he placed his own skin, he later approached Jason. Believing that Jason had been apprentice to the mage and now without master he invited Jason to apprentice to him, an offer that was quickly accepted. For the next 5 years Jason worked like a dog but by the end of that time he was pronounced as competent by his mentor.

Jason then returned to the surface world and soon joined up with the adventuring band that included Corrie and Duster. After a few successful commissions the group undertook a dungeon delve that was well beyond them coming across in particular a Mind Flayer which wiped out most of the group, whilst he had seen these creatures in Skullport this was Jason's first real contact with them and was to lead to a phobia that has only worsened with the passage of time and further contact.
It was following this trip that Jason, Corrie and Duster arrived at Fallow's Cross and the rest is, as they say, history.

The name Elfriend is one he was awarded whilst a member of the Fallow's Cross group and comes from assistance he rendered to the Flying Elf community in the Greycloak Hills following an unfortunate incident with the chiefs daughter and other members of the group in particular Corrie, Chartrise and Duster. Jason used his magical skills to find the formula for a potion which enabled them to hide their wings by turning them invisible.

Perhaps the two moments that have caused Jason greatest pleasure whilst a member of the Fallow's Cross group both involve Marie. The first was when early on he discovered the secret of her half-elf nature when she let slip that she could see in infravision, the second and by far the more pleasurable was when he had to lightening bolt Marie in order to save her life. He has not let her forget this and has no doubts that Marie is planning her revenge.

There are rumours (started by Corrie) that Jason is smitten with a fighter/priestess of Elistraee by the name of Iljrene. Jason has not actually denied this (too many of those priests have detect lie you know) but nor has he confirmed it. All he will say is that he admires her spirit and her temper - she did not try to slit his throat when he was at his most irritating!!

Notes:

Jason is an acquisitive collector of spells and magical items, this lead to one of the worst rows in the group when Jason, Marie and three of the Paladins went to a wizard's tower. He has a not totally deserved reputation for putting his own skin first, it is true that he does not like taking risks and thinks little of those who charge into a situation without heed, this has again caused "heated" discussions particularly with the Paladins in the group. Suffice to say that the Paladin's definition of courage and Jason's of stupidity bear strong resemblance to one and other.
