Fallow's Cross maintains a militia in the event of attack from the Troll Moors. This happens every three years or so when the Troll population in the Moors grows too great and they work themselves up to attacks settlements around the fringe. Nesme is also a particularly popular target for them. The northern part of the town is enclosed within a 12 foot high earth bank, which tends to deflect the attackers to either side, as well as providing an advantageous weapons platform from which to launch fire-based attacks upon the attacking trolls.

The barracks incorporates a training ground, parade ground and archery stalls. There are also facilities to practice targeting the catapults. The armoury has a collection of polearms, swords, shields and armour, which is routinely maintained by the militia personnel.

The militia is composed of every able bodied man between the ages of 15 and 50 in the village, as well as a number of women who have proved their skills of archery. The catapult crews are regularly drilled and trained, as they provide the backbone of the defences against the Trolls who make up the most likely enemy. The village has three catapults with which to bombard any attacker, one in the stables in storage, one in the barracks practice ground and one atop the middle of the earth bank, normally covered by tarpaulin as protection from the weather.
