The Temple of Chauntea

The building that now houses the Temple of Chauntea was once known as the home of one of the most corrupt religious centres in the Savage North. The Temple of Loviatar the Merciless, as it was known, was considered by many to be a blight upon the town and region. Its crucifixion cross, mounted high on the tower above the main square, cast a pall over the town - its grisly occupants reminding the populace of the horrors that were a daily spectacle within the temple.

The Temple, however had a feud with the mage Mulmar, who owned the tower on the other side of the town. In one terrible night of magical carnage, the feud came to head. The hoard of shadows summoned by the temple drained the unwary mage and his apprentice, but as the mage died, his magical contingencies unleashed an Invisible Stalker onto the Temple, which killed everyone in it before they realised they were being attacked.

It was into this chaos that the original trio of Dustar, Corrie and Jason arrived to clear out Invisible Stalker. Their reward was to gain possession of the tower. The town took back the temple and cleansed it of the foul corruption that was the Loviatans. Very soon after a wandering contingent of Chauntean Druids took custody of the building and consecrated it to the Mother Goddess. They were made very welcome and soon after, the town began to flourish as it had once before the Loviatans came.

Corrie negotiated a monthly donation to the fledgling church to help them get established, and also provide the Fallow's Cross Adventurers with a ready source of medicinal aid, since at the time, the group was sorely lacking any clerics. This arrangement worked fine for several months until one occasion when a great deal of healing was required in a short time and the resident clerics could not provide it. Corrie brought out the contract they had signed before and pointed out that the terms stated that any healing requirements would be catered for. To her this meant if they were unable to provide it, they should - at their own expense seek outside assistance. When the clerics considered this and the cost it would entail, they realised the monthly fee would not cover a fraction of the cost. They then terminated the contract immediately, even though there were no provisions in the contract to do so.

The Temple appealed to the Mayor, who agreed with them that the contract terms were a bit harsh, but also said that they should never have signed it in the first place. He ordered them to repay all the money given by Fallow's Cross Adventurers and suggested they acquire some legal instruction from somewhere before negotiating any further arrangements.

Corrie was still upset by the whole thing and to this day has little time for the Chauntean religion, even though it is not a source of evil.

The Temple of Chauntea is run by the High Priest Asturil of Sundabar (N hm P12 WIS 17). His deputy is Leila Greenheart (N hf P9 WIS 18). There are also four under-priests: Baruin (N hm P4 WIS 15), Tallis (N hm P4), Larisey (N hf P4 WIS 16) and Jugert (N hem P5 WIS 14), as well as nine acolytes (P2 and P1). Apart from Corrie, they are well regarded in the town and were instrumental in saving many of the townspeople when Apharac the Red Dragon destroyed much of the town when it attacked Fallow's Cross Adventurers. In fact, the temple's tower took the brunt of one of the Dragon's fiery breath attacks. The stones of the tower began to melt in the ferocious heat and to this day you can see that the tower slumps forward because of this. It is now becoming a famous sight in the region and has become known as the Melted Tower of Fallow's Cross. Even Volo - the much travelled writer was impressed by the Melted Tower, but sadly not enough for him to include it or any mention of Fallow's Cross in his "Guide to the North".
