Day 2 - An Old Face and Information

The next morning dawned bright, clear and HOT! Upon descending to the inn's common room they were surprised to come upon a female halfling tucking into an enormous breakfast.

"So it was you I heard about causing trouble." said Chartrise, smiling broadly at her old comrades. "I thought I'd come and give you a hand - with breakfast at the very least!" Corrie's response was a groan and something unprintable. The Paladin, Justin was a little more put out - "A Priestess of Mask - and a Halfling at that!" He said just before storming out, citing irreconcilable moral differences as the reason for his departure. "Well, that's one less problem to worry about." was Chartrise's only comment as she tucked into another round of toast.

In fact, the arrival of the Demarchess was to prove fortuitous as she too was a native of Calimport, and just as Julienne was skilled on the street, Chartrise was more skilled in the information gathering aspect. Indeed, she began immediately by showing the party a copy of GOLEMIC SCRIBES - a daily newsheet published by the Purl Information Brokers. She explained that they were one of the Thieves' Guilds, but concentrated on buying, selling and acquiring information instead of jewels or contraband. It was a very profitable business and inordinately useful to everyone, from Government officials to other Thieves' Guilds.

This led to Chartrise explaining the way the six Thieves' Guilds worked in Calimport. Purl dealt in information mainly, but had some sidelines like GOLEMIC SCRIBES ; Haldeman was the biggest - a smuggling, pirate and slave dealing specialist. It came to Corrie and Crompton that they had heard the name before and had seen ships sailing the 'H" rune all over Faerun. Brandson was another of the better off Guilds, with interests in Casinos, high class prostitution and the better end of the drugs and smuggling operations; Parvel was once very wealthy but several years of bad luck and management had damaged its status so that it now only had dealings in street-level crime, although it was fighting to take back what influence Pasha Parvel rightly believed belonged to him; Guild Angaril, run by Pasha Angaril who was once an enforcer for Parvel, but a few years ago split away, stealing many of Parvel's best people. His guild had its fingers in many pies and had stepped on the other Guilds toes more than once. His Guild was not popular with the others and wars occasionally broke out between them; Revillo - the most ruthless of the six Guilds, concentrated in assassination, slavery and protection rackets. Wherever a strong arm was required, Guild Revillo could be sure to provide the muscle - for a price!

It was into this moral morass that the party has dropped itself into - Marie's disappearance was in some way mixed up in all this. Chartrise recommended that one of the first things to do was a trip to see Guild Purl to see if there was anything known about Marie's disappearance. In the meantime they studied the GOLEMIC SCRIBES . It spoke of, amongst other things, a valuable cargo Haldeman had picked up and were probably hiding on a ship in the Ship's Graveyard - a region of derelict, decaying ships dumped by their owners, to the east of the harbour. It also spoke of problems the Gnome Mines were having with Vampires. This caught Crompton's attention - a real ethnic Gnomish Quarter in Calimport. Chartrise then informed him that there were also real ethnic Halfling, Elvish, Dwarven and even Orcish Quarters in Calimport. Overelle was keen to see the Elvish quarter so, while Corrie, Crompton and Chartrise went to visit Purl, Overelle, Styrel and some of the others went to see Elvenhaven.

Nearby Elvenhaven, Overelle found a Church of Lathander and was transported to seventh heaven by the juxtaposition of Lathander and Elvenhaven so near to each other. Styrel managed to gain entry to Elvenhaven and gifted them with a magical feather he had acquired not long before. The Elves were pleased and to his surprise, planted it in the grove of trees which surrounded the Elven Quarter, whereupon it immediately grew into a fully mature oak tree.

The visit to Purl did not yield any immediately useful information, but they did pay for a search to be done for any relevant information. This paid dividends later in the day when they received a scroll which detailed some of Marie's past - in particular why she left Calimport. She had been working for Guild Parvel, but betrayed them to Brandson in revenge for past wrongs done to her - the death of her lover and young child. It seemed a fair assumption that Parvel had found out that Marie had returned to Calimport and had taken steps to get his revenge upon her. This news marked the end of their achievements for their second day in Calimport - a city they were all growing to dislike.
