On the other side of the summoning circle's gate, they found themselves appearing in the middle of a pitched battle - right in the path of charging cavalry. The mounts were not horses, however, but Black Unicorns! They managed to prevent themselves being crushed underfoot by the judicious use of a Wall of Force spell, and managed to get above the battle onto some cliffs nearby. They could see what appeared to be a number of magical constructs in the battle, golems composed of precious stones. They could see Ruby, emerald and what they could only guess was diamond golems cutting a swathe through the lesser troops.
On an adjoining hill, though, they spotted some familiar figures - a priest of Cyric, guarded by two armoured Drow females. Alarra, Styrel and Lutiar recognized them from Calimport and the party began to manoeuvre themselves toward this group. They finally attacked but their opponents escaped.
On a hill opposite, they could see a female mage casting spells into the midst of the golem led army. This mage seemed to turn the tide of battle and gradually each golem was destroyed, but at horrendous cost to the attackers. After a couple of hours, the battle was over and the work of clearing up begun. The mage from the hill came to the party and thanked them for their assistance. She introduced herself a the Symbul, the Queen of Alagrond. She intimated that she knew something of their quest and would be able to assist, but she would need their co-operation in another matter. She gave them a letter from one of her agents in Thay, and explained that her spies had informed her that Zass Tam, the Zulkir of Necromancy and a powerful person in Thay, was involved in some sort of complex magical ritual. A mage friend of hers had been kidnapped by Zass Tam using some strange magical effect. She needed a small group who could infiltrate, rescue her friend, find out what was happening and if possible stop it.
The party agreed and The Symbul magically transported them to a location in Thay called Thaymount. They came upon a patrol of Fire giants, but escaped up a gorge which led to their destination, a huge pair of bronze doors, with engravings of lizard like creatures on them. Using information from the spy's letter, they were able to gain entrance to the Citadel. Once inside, they discovered a number of guardians, including Iron, Ruby and Clay golems. The letter contained instruction on how to pass these guardians, but it meant lying - saying that they were minions of Zass Tam and worshipped evil gods like Cyric or Loviatar. The paladin of Torm, Orris decided this was against his principles and instead of trying to find some compromise, walked out of the Citadel. This left the party short of a fighter - Corrie sent a message to Marie telling her to get her brother and bring him to Thaymount. Marie sacrificed a scroll of Teleport without Error to bring Morcleb to Thay and took Orris back with her to the Fallow's Cross teleport platform.
Morcleb caught up with the party and they continued through the many strange chambers in the Citadel. In one of the chambers, they came upon Amul al-Habn, a noble Djinn, who was very co-operative and gave them information about the next few chambers. He explained that he was still bound in service to Zass Tam for 500 years and had been stuck in this one room for a long time and was bored. The party promised to try to free him if they could. The Djinn was very grateful and they passed on. Later they came to a location guarded by a Marilith and Molydeus, who were playing "pickup sticks" with a pile of bones. Alarra managed to get the pile to move using telekinesis and the two distrustful Tanar'ri started fighting. In the confusion, the party slipped past. A Galbrezu standing guard in another room was no match for a hasted Morcleb, who charged in and cut the Tanar'ri to pieces before it even had time to react.
They now found themselves in a different complex of rooms, which showed evidence of inhabitation by Zass Tam. In the library they found some information about what Zass Tam was doing - trying to entrap the Tanar'ri Lord Eltab and harness the creature's power. They found some prison cells containing the friend of The Symbul and some others and located The Chamber of Twin Burnings, where the ritual was taking place. There, sat in a chair inside a crystalline nine-sided pyramid sat the hideous form of the Tanar'ri Lord Eltab.
Just as Zass Tam and a group of his acolytes arrived, the party smashed the crystal, freeing Eltab. Morcleb and the Tanar'ri began to fight, but Zass Tam stepped in and destroyed the Tanar'ri, in the process damaging the underground complex and killing his acolytes. The party made a run for it, before they became trapped in the complex. The Symbul had given them a means to get back to Alagrond, which they used.
The Symbul was very grateful and helped them all get back to full health. She explained that she has located where the sword left the Prime Material Plane - a gate which leads to Sigil.
