They settled not far from an old mage, Azzmere, who had lived in the area for about 40 years , studying the relics he found in the Badlands as he called them. He was happy when the farmers arrived to build the settlement, but Tillian - or Captain Tillian as he now preferred to be called had an intense dislike of mages, and made it very uncomfortable for the kindly old man, who continued his hermit-like existence only a mile away from a growing town.
As time went on, rumours of dangerous creatures roaming the badlands came to the ears of the Baron and Captain Tillian, so as a preventative measure, they began to explore and map the territory further. The first few excursions into the badlands went smoothly, with the soldiers mapping some of the nearer regions of the wastelands and killing dozens of potentially harmful scavengers. Soon however, things started to go wrong.
An expedition further south into the badlands ran into a fiercely hostile creature that seemingly was immune to their weapons. Only one soldier escaped, bringing back tales of a terrifying fire-breathing monster. It was at this point that the first contact with Fallow's Cross was made.
