In Baldur's Gate, Marie spent some time trying to re-establish contacts with people she had met some years before in her journey north from Calimport. She had stayed in Baldur's Gate for several months, but it soon became clear to her that it was too close to Calimport - too much traffic with Calimport guilds such as Haldeman - to be safe for her. Now, she tried to pick up on any information about strange ships and Drow in particular. One story caught her attention and following it up, she met another female half-elf called Allie, who wanted to help. The two half-elven women quickly became firm friends. It was decided that in order to follow up on a story of a strange ship reportedly stopping for supplies at an island just down the coast called Beacon Point, Marie, Julienne and Allie would take a ship to the island.
The trip went uneventful, apart from Julienne being seasick, until two days out from the island, the ship came under attack at night. Marie rushed to join the defence, and fought off a magical attack from a mage on the side of the pirates, but an unseen assailant knocked her unconscious. When she came round, she found the ship deserted and heading towards rocks marked by a lighthouse on the top of a high cliff. before she could reach her cabin to get all her equipment, the ship hit the rocks with a sickening screech of tortured wood and she fell into the raging surf. She fought and struggled with the waves - aiming for the beach just a little further down the coast. Exhausted, she crawled over the sand and collapsed into sleep.
The next day, she found herself without any belongings - no weapons or spell components. All that she could find in her pockets were a couple of her lockpicks. She decided to head for the lighthouse, where she met an old man called Antonus, a rather eccentric mage, who told her about the pirates that operated from the island, and how the pirates had corrupted the authorities in the town of Kalindon. She then made her way to the town to try to find out more about the pirates, but was arrested almost as soon as she arrived, but managed to escape and find some of her belongings.
She headed north, toward where she had discovered the pirate base was and where Julienne and Allie were being held. On her way, she encountered a band of Locathah, who were opposed to the pirates and offered their help if she was going to attack the base. She found a tunnel through the range of hills at the north end of the island which her information had told her would lead to the pirate base. At the far end of the tunnel, she found the caves the pirates used as a prison and found Julienne and Allie in god health. As it was dark, she decided it would be a perfect time to attack the base, and made a plan.
The plan however was flawed from the outset. She wanted to cause a diversion by damaging the ship, so bringing the Locathah into the fight. She decide to use a Lightning Bolt to hole the ship, but her ignorance of ship building made her underestimate the thickness of wood, so that when she cast her spell, it did little more than scorch the wood - and alert everyone that someone was attacking them! Fortunately, she had taken the precaution of casting a Fly upon herself so she was able to duck and dive as pirates rushed out of their garrison to attack her. She failed to notice the great ballista on the ship aimed at her and only when the huge bolt caught her a glancing blow did she fully realize the mistake she had made. It was only by dint of furious martial combat and spells that she survived. Allie helped, as did Julienne, until the Locathah warriors surged out of the harbour and began decimating the outclassed pirates. The pirates had the last laugh however.
Around the harbour were several ancient pyramids, and in one of these was the mage who had attacked Marie on the ship. He had acquired her scrolls and to Marie's humiliation used them against her. As she was letting loose a Lightning Bolt to dispatch him, he used a Feeblemind scroll which simultaneously turned her mind into that of a child. Her lightning bolt, released at exactly the same moment caught him unprepared and fried him to a crisp. Marie, however, was almost as helpless as a child. Her daughter came to her rescue and kept her safe, killing two pirates. Finally, the pirates were dealt with and it was agreed between Julienne and Allie that Allie would try to cast the teleport spell from one of Marie's scrolls to take them back to Baldur's Gate.
The teleport worked and they arrived in the square outside the huge Temple of Gond. Suddenly, Allie drew a wickedly serrated knife, dripping poison, which Julienne saw was engraved with the 'Z' rune of the Zhentarim and plunged it into Marie's defenceless back. Marie screamed and collapsed and Julienne leapt to attack Allie, but the Zhentarim assassin escaped into the crowd, believing her task accomplished. It was only Julienne's quick thinking in getting her mother into the Gond temple which saved Marie's life. Under the Gondsmen's care, Marie recuperated and Julienne sold as much of their equipment as she could to pay the price of their help to cure Marie of the feeblemind spell. This done, Marie spent several days in their care before she was fully recovered.
Their task was still nowhere near complete - the trail of the Sword of Elistraee seemed to be cold. Then, Marie heard of a village down the coast to the south which had been destroyed and decided to investigate in person. To their surprise, they came upon Styrel in Baldur's Gate and Marie asked that he take Julienne back to Stanzfeld with him. Alone now, she booked passage to the murdered village. Here she saw the distinctive work of Drow and was able to follow a trail which lead into a cave system and further on into the underdark. Being careful, she followed it, coming upon scene after scene of death - the Drow seemed to be cutting anything in their path to pieces, typically showing no mercy. This ruthlessness, however made tracking them through the underdark easy - normally a very dangerous place.
They travelled further and further, day after day, week after week until suddenly there was daylight up ahead. Now all she had to do was find out where she was! It turned out, she was in the foothills of the Starspire Mountains in Tether, within sight of the town of Port Kir. Here, she found that a ship had been chartered by a priest of Cyric, accompanied by a woman in dark robes who would not show her face. Their destination? Calimport!
