The Grove of Life and Sigil

News came to Fallow's Cross of a situation requiring some attention. It seemed a village was being terrorized by giant walking trees and help was required. A party from Fallow's Cross Adventurers went out to investigate. Included were Gathercole, Auran, Lutiar and his new wife, an elf called Alarra, and a strange man called Surbitan. By the time they reached the village, they were able to witness an attack by the creatures - huge apparently unstoppable creatures composed of wood - almost like wood golems as opposed to walking trees such as Treants.

After driving the wooded creatures away from the village, the party followed them back into the mountains from where they had come. They found a secluded entrance to a hollowed out mountain, inside of which was a hidden Druidic grove, tended by strange creatures, controlled by an insane druid.

The druid's grove, however was dominated by five spheres of light, linked together by magical energies. In the middle of the circle, the body of the druid hung, suspended by the magical energies coursing through his blackened body. He seemed dead, but he was still controlling his strange creations. It appeared that the druid had cast some strange spell which enhanced the life giving properties of the druidic grove, so much so in fact that it was getting out of control.

It was decided that the circle had to be broken, so each party member chose a sphere and tried to damage it. Each time one was touched, it seemed to swallow the attacker and each had to overcome a different challenge to be released. Auran found himself in a strange limbo, with two globes of energy. He finally worked out that these globes contained spells, manifesting as small packets of magic which he had to absorb. As soon as he did this, he returned to the grove, where the sphere had vanished. He also found he was able to cast any spell he desired!

Once they had all solved their individual problems, the druid was released from the spell he had cast and things returned to normal. There was one other result from the time the party spent in the druid's grove. Alarra discovered she was pregnant after she and Lutiar had 'entertained' each other in the druid's grove.

A few weeks later, Auran and Surbitan were to be reunited in a mystery over a series of robberies taking place at a mansion outside Waterdeep. Assisted by Vax, they investigated the robberies and found the culprit seemed to be using roses from the garden of the mansion to be activating a portal to get away. Following, they found themselves in a strange city - a city which appeared to be inside a torus, a city they found to be called Sigil.

Auran's strange appearance seemed to be nothing compared tot he strangeness of the population of Sigil, and it was with astonishment they realised the city existed in the outer planes. Here, Tanar'ri and Baatezu walked the same streets, along with other extra-planar creatures, seemingly drawn from their nightmares! They were soon befriended by a native of Sigil, Jinx, a Tiefling, who showed them round, acting as a guide and helping them locate the thief. It turned out however, to involve something going on with a faction of Sigil known as the Dustmen, who normally collected the dead from the streets of the city. It appeared several people were disappearing and all clues pointed toward the Dustmen being involved.

After further investigation, they managed to gain access to the Dustmen's headquarters in Sigil, known as The Mortuary, and from there through a portal which unfortunately for Auran, led to the Elemental Plane of Fire. Auran, being a Flying Elf, was naturally worried about fire, but his recent experiences had turned this fear into a phobia of debilitating proportions. The citadel they found themselves in seemed to be protected from the surrounding fires, so as long as Auran stayed away from the windows, he was able to continue. They explored the citadel and discovered it belonged to an important group known as the Planeswalkers. These were the people responsible for the thefts. Unfortunately while exploring, they damaged the power source for the shield protecting the citadel from the fires of the Plane.

The only way to get back to Sigil was to use a portal. Each portal, however, requires a key. The key to this portal was for a mage to read a scroll. The only mage they had in the party was Auran, who by this time was catatonic with terror as the flames advanced, consuming the citadel. Surbitan, with his powers of the mind was able to implant a suggestion into Auran's mind that if he should see a scroll in front of his, he was to cast it. The scroll key was then placed in front of Auran's face where he could see it and the post-hypnotic suggestion took hold and with seconds to spare, successfully read the scroll.

Singed, the party returned to Sigil, and were able to use the first portal they found to take them back to Waterdeep. Jinx elected to remain in Sigil.
